BAMA reports decade-long resilience in UK metal aerosol can sales

The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association reports 10 years of long-term resilience for metal aerosol can sales in the UK.

Informed by data from global market research and business intelligence firm Euromonitor, the figures show sustained sales performance from 2016 – 2025.  At approximately 529 million-unit sales in 2025, compared to around 567 million in 2016, the decrease over the last decade should be framed alongside impressive growth in key categories.

BAMA Chief Executive Patrick Heskins notes the trajectory: “Overall, we see a resilient performance in UK aerosol sales. As is to be expected, there is a dip during and after the pandemic, but since 2021, there is a positive growth pattern emerging, most notably in insecticides, skin and sun care applications, and edible oil sales.”

Personal care leads with rises in key categories

Although there has been a percentage drop in the number of personal care aerosols sold between 2016 and 2025, sales are bolstered by considerable rises in certain categories. For example, bath and shower aerosol sales, skin care, with sun care aerosol sales almost doubling over the last 10 years. Decreases can be seen in hair care and depilatories categories, and despite a fall of 8% in deodorant sprays, personal care is far and away the sector leader.
Household: surface care and insecticides show biggest increases
The standout statistics within the household sector include insecticides and surface care applications, both rising by more than 13% over the decade. A more modest, yet, promising rise is air care sales, despite the advent of new home fragrance alternatives. The most significant percentage shift can be seen in aerosol polish sprays which have encountered a drop of over 35%.

Significant rise in edible oil sales Edible oil sprays

The ongoing popularity of edible oil sprays is represented by the 19% rise in sales from 2016 to 2025, perhaps pointing to a long-term move away from traditional food oil dispensing.

Patick Heskins adds: “The Euromonitor sales data supports a clearer understanding of the categories that are gaining momentum, and also where change is developing in the UK.
“Over the last decade, consumers have been driven by a diversity of trends, varying market conditions, social influences and changing expectations across all sectors. We are delighted to see that despite these shifts, the aerosol package has maintained its staying power.”
Innovation trends and consumer motivation

Additional insights from Euromonitor’s ‘Qualitative Insights’ reveal further market themes, including the continued innovation within sun care, skin care and men’s grooming categories; the growing focus on sustainability and environmentally responsible packaging solutions, and the opportunities for premiumisation in personal care. In terms of consumer messaging, the data also shows an increasing importance of omnichannel retail and e-commerce, and the influence of convenience, performance and value on product development.
