Updated Industry Guides Released

We are pleased to share that we have updated four of BAMA's industry guides, covering the UK Aerosol Dispenser Regulations, the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), Electrostatic Safety, and the Transport of Aerosols.

Dr Paul Jackson, BAMA’s Regulatory Affairs Director, says: “As the legislative and regulatory landscape continues to evolve at pace, it is crucial that our guides remain relevant and valuable resources for the industry and our members.”

The updated guides include:

  • The BAMA Guide to the UK Aerosol Dispenser Regulations

Following the publication of the BAMA Guide to the UK Aerosol Dispenser Regulations in 2022, the association has now issued a second edition. The updated guide reflects further amendments that have been made to the regulations since the EU Exit, in particular in relation to compliance marking. Providing advice on how to comply with the regulations, the guide covers areas including; the selection of container and propellants and ingredients, filling rules and contents declaration, labelling and compliance marking, as well as advice on flammability classification and hazard analysis.

  • The BAMA Guide to the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR)

The BAMA Guide to DSEAR has been revised to ensure it remains tailored to the aerosol industry. Helping aerosol manufacturers understand and comply with DSEAR, it provides a framework to risk assess the use of flammable propellants and solvents and offers industry-specific guidance aligned with the BAMA Standard for Consumer Safety and Good Manufacturing Practice. The guide also comprises several tools, including a Risk Assessment decision chart, a Zone classification for the aerosol filling line, and risk assessment frameworks for end-of-line operations and warehousing.

  • BAMA Electrostatic Guidelines

Also published is an updated version of the BAMA Electrostatic Guidelines which addresses the control of the hazards associated with electrostatic charge during the production, handling, and disposal of aerosol products.  The guide gives particular attention to the manufacture and handling of aerosols that contain powder and flammable ingredients. It provides guidance on how to avoid the creation of an electrostatic charge and how to control its dissipation should one occur, how ignition may arise, and sets outs core safety measures.

New Transport Guide updates - coming soon

Described as an ‘invaluable route map through the complex legislation governing the transport of aerosols’, BAMA has issued an update to its Transport Guide.   The Guide now in its 16th edition since 1991, is updated every two years to reflect the biennial changes to the international codes for transporting dangerous goods by road, rail, sea and air.  The guide explains how the UN model regulations and modal implementation apply to aerosols with particular focus on the transport of aerosols as ‘dangerous goods in limited quantities’.  Alongside the relevant extracts from the regulations, it also covers what training is needed.
